Programme: Mathematics Refresher Course

Introduction:

This computer-based Mathematics Course is aimed at people who want to refresh and update their skills within business mathematics.

The purpose of this course is to help you develop the necessary skills and background knowledge to enable you to analyse business data, trends and results and to quantitatively evaluate business decisions.

Content:

Students enrolled for the Mathematics Refresher Course can download electronic copies of all the materials for the course including:
  • Five Adobe pdf files containing the course book notes.
  • Five PowerPoint slides to be used in conjunction with the course book notes.
  • Five Word documents containing the five assignments.
Students complete the course in their own time by reading the course book notes in conjunction with the PowerPoint slides, which should be opened and set to ‘Slide Show’. Then using the PowerPoint Slide Show as a prompt, each student works their way through the course book notes for each module. At the end of each module, they should do the corresponding assignment.

As each assignment is completed, it should be uploaded onto the Maths Refresher Website where it is marked and returned with helpful comments as appropriate.

The time required to complete each module depends on the level of competence of each individual student. Each module could be completed with about three to five hours of study. Some students take about 10 hours per module. The idea is that you really learn and understand the material and not just “get through” the course.

The Mathematics Refresher Course consists of five modules:
  1. Introduction to mathematics.
  2. Mathematical tools and economics.
  3. Probability.
  4. Statistics.
  5. Financial mathematics.
All modules have a basic section and an advanced section. To pass the course the student should demonstrate competence in the basic section. The advanced section is offered as a challenge for those students who desire that little bit extra. The assignments are based on material in both sections.

For a more detailed breakdown of each module click on the 'More Information' button below.

Marking scheme for assignments:

There are five assignments and all submitted assignments are marked. Assignments receive a “pass” when successfully completed. When all five assignments have been successfully completed the student receives a “pass” for the full course.

There are 7 questions in each assignment and each question is marked out of 15 with:

  • 15 marks for getting all calculations correct.
  • 10 marks for getting most of the calculations correct.
  • 5 marks for genuinely attempting the question.
  • 0 marks for no answer.
The total is 105 but this is assumed to be 100. Thus, the maximum mark is 100. Therefore, a score of 95/105 is assumed to be 95/100 or 95%. The passing grade for each assignment is 40%.

Registration:

Once registered an email will be sent to the designated email address with login and password details. Students should retrieve this email and follow the link to confirm their registration. Once registration is confirmed, each student may sign in and access the full set of course materials.
